What is red diesel?

“Red diesel” is the most common name used for gas oil. To prevent its misuse in road vehicles, it is a legal requirement for red diesel to be marked with a red dye as well as chemical markers.

Red diesel is essentially the same as white diesel (DERV) however you are unable to use it in road vehicles and other prohibited vehicles and uses. 

Some of the more common names you might hear red diesel referred as include tractor diesel, 35-second oil, agricultural diesel, cherry red, rebated diesel, and generator diesel. 

What industries use red diesel?

As of the 1st of April 2022, the following categories can use red diesel:

  • Travelling fairs and circuses 
  • Fuel used for non-commercial purposes – electricity generation and heating
  • Agriculture, horticulture, fish farming, and forestry  Rail transport
  • Community amateur sports clubs and golf courses Sailing, boating, and marine transport

How much red diesel can I buy?

You can purchase red diesel from WCF Fuels in quantities from 500 litres up to a full articulated tanker of 36,000 litres.

What is the tax on red diesel?

The VAT (value-added tax) charged on red diesel is 5% up to 2,300 litres. This increases to the standard rate of 20% VAT above 2,300 litres; however, you may be able to claim 15% back if you are eligible for fuel duty relief. For more details on fuel duty relief, we advise you to review the Government's website

What vehicles can use red diesel? 

The types of special vehicles that may use rebated red diesel are: 

  • vehicles designed to operate on a railway
  • agricultural vehicles
  • special vehicles

But only when they’re being used for qualifying purposes, we recommend that you check The Government website for specific details on the acceptable uses of each type of vehicle, before purchasing red diesel to ensure you are operating within the confinements of the law.

What is summer and winter-grade red diesel? 

There are two grades of diesel, known as winter grade and summer grade diesel. Winter-grade diesel is formulated to contain an additive that prevents wax crystals from forming at low temperatures, this means it will resist solidifying in extremely cold temperatures.

Where winter-grade fuel can be used all year round, summer-grade diesel is optimised for summer use only due to its slightly higher viscosity. Winter-grade fuel is available from 15th November to 15th March.
