“Red diesel” is the most common name used for gas oil. To prevent its misuse in road vehicles, it is a legal requirement for red diesel to be marked with a red dye as well as chemical markers.
Red diesel is essentially the
same as white diesel (DERV) however you are unable to use it in road vehicles
and other prohibited vehicles and uses.
Some of the more common names you might hear red diesel referred as include tractor diesel, 35-second oil, agricultural diesel, cherry red, rebated diesel, and generator diesel.

But only when they’re being used for qualifying purposes, we recommend that you check The Government website for specific details on the acceptable uses of each type of vehicle, before purchasing red diesel to ensure you are operating within the confinements of the law.
There are two grades of diesel, known as winter grade and summer grade diesel. Winter-grade diesel is formulated to contain an additive that prevents wax crystals from forming at low temperatures, this means it will resist solidifying in extremely cold temperatures.
Where winter-grade fuel can be used all year round, summer-grade diesel is optimised for summer use only due to its slightly higher viscosity. Winter-grade fuel is available from 15th November to 15th March.
